The worm's body is both the main restriction and one of the most useful tools in the game. Strong players do not simply avoid the body. They predict where each segment will be after the next few moves and use that shape to preserve turns, cross gaps, or support a route.

Think in Shapes, Not Single Moves

Every head movement shifts the rest of the worm through the previous path. A move that looks harmless at the head may pull the tail away from an important support cell or fill the only available turning space.

Before entering a narrow area, picture the complete body after two or three inputs. If there is no empty cell beside the head at that future point, the route probably needs a different entry angle.

Count Useful Empty Cells

Not every empty cell has equal value. The most important spaces are:

  • cells beside a corner where the head must turn;
  • cells near the apple that remain open after growth;
  • cells that allow the tail to clear a corridor;
  • cells below or beside the body that provide temporary support.

A large open room can still be useless if the worm enters it in a straight line with no turning radius. One correctly placed empty cell can matter more than the total area.

Let the Tail Do Its Work

When the body blocks a passage, the answer is often not a full restart. Move the head through a safe loop and watch when the tail leaves the blocked cell. This is tail clearance: spending movement to change the body's position without abandoning the overall route.

The technique is especially useful when the apple path and exit path share the same corridor. Entering too early traps the worm; entering after the tail clears creates a clean return line.

Growth Changes the Puzzle

Always evaluate a route twice: once with the starting length and once with the post-apple length. The extra segment can:

  • prevent a tight U-turn;
  • leave the tail in a doorway for one additional move;
  • create support where the shorter worm would fall or slip;
  • change the order in which corridors must be used.

This is why the direct apple route often fails.

Practice Deliberately

On an early level, pause after each move and name the head cell, tail cell, and next turning cell. Then replay at normal speed. The goal is not to count forever, but to build an accurate mental model of how the body follows the head. Once that model becomes automatic, difficult layouts feel much less random.
