Apple Worm Route Planning - Solve from the Portal Backward

5/14/2026

Most failed Apple Worm attempts are not failures to reach the apple. They are failures to leave the apple. The shortest route to the food can place the longer worm in exactly the wrong shape for the portal, so a reliable solution begins at the end.

Start with the Final Position

Before moving, inspect the cells beside the portal. Ask three questions:

  • Which direction can the head enter from?
  • Where must the body be during that final move?
  • Which nearby cell must stay empty so the head can turn?

This creates a target shape, not just a target location. In Apple Worm, reaching the portal from the wrong angle is often equivalent to not reaching it at all.

Build the Route in Two Halves

Treat every level as two connected puzzles:

  1. Move from the starting position to the apple.
  2. Move from the larger post-apple position to the portal.

Trace the second half first. If the apple sits inside a narrow pocket, imagine the extra body segment before choosing an approach. The safest apple route is usually the one that leaves the head facing an open area, even when it takes more inputs.

Protect the Turning Cell

A turning cell is an empty space that lets the head change direction while the tail follows. Players often consume this space by laying the body across it too early. Mark the tightest corner on the portal route and avoid filling it until the final approach begins.

When the path crosses itself, timing matters. Let the tail clear the intersection before sending the head through. A short wait or small loop can be part of the solution rather than wasted movement.

Use Checkpoints Instead of Memorizing Everything

For longer stages, remember three checkpoints:

  • the shape immediately before collecting the apple;
  • the first safe position after growth;
  • the alignment used to enter the portal.

If an attempt fails, identify which checkpoint was wrong. This is faster than replaying the same opening and hoping for a different result.

A Practical Test

Open an unfamiliar level from the complete level list and avoid moving for ten seconds. Find the portal, determine its entry direction, then work backward until the imagined route meets the apple. This habit turns visual guessing into a repeatable planning method and becomes increasingly valuable in the later levels.
